This is a celebration of the life of Steve Allen, the consummate Old Pro!!  He had the uncanny ability to make everyone he met a friend.  He was a lover of the game of baseball and other sports as well.  He was a great father, husband, coach, mentor, and friend to us all.  In this club, where manhood is cherished and we call each other brother, it's rare for us to ever express how much we appreciate each other until it's too late.  But late or not, we all love you Steve and will miss you tremendously!!

Finally, Steve stops to shake hands with his good friend who wishes he could run a 10k as well as Steve.

Wait a minute, I did better than that...

Padre's manager Bruce Bochy likes to talk every year to the Old Pros and he could not talk to a greater baseball fan than Steve, who as president for 1998 presents a miniature bat to the Boch for one of many entertaining nights of sharing memorable stories with the Old Pros.  (Every year since 1998 the Padres have won their week day game on the night Bruce speaks to the Old Pros).

Bruce was always accompanied during that period by then Padre's public relations manager, Charles Steinberg who accepts some Old Pro goodies and enjoys some good old Steve Allen humor.

At the president's reception prior to the Old Pro holiday party, Steve proves what a lady's man he is with Sandi Pettey.

A somewhat gimpy Steve sports a knee brace and enjoys only a 2 mile fun run this year.

But still crosses the finish with great pride and that wonderful smile.

Get there early and have more beer. Hmm.. there may be something to this fun run stuff.

A great tribute to Steve's life was held Friday, May 9, 2003, at the El Camino Memorial Park.  An overflow crowd attended and then adjourned to Hoyt Park in Scripps Ranch for continuation of the celebration of Steve's life.  Old Pro and friend Dennis Downs emceed the ceremony and did a fine job.  Yankee pitcher David Wells, who was coached early on in his life by Steve in Ocean Beach, flew in from a game he had dedicated the night before to Steve in Seattle.  The Yankees won big.  Dave presented the family with his jersey, mitt and a couple of balls from the winning game to the family.  Steve was also a Navy veteran and a United States flag was presented to Nancy as well.

Steve's sons David and Bryan wrote some inspirational words about their dad for the ceremony that celebrated his life.  Click here to read what David had to say and click here to read what fellow Old Pro Bryan had to say about his dad, his hero.

Nancy and the entire family would like to pass on their thanks for all the cards, flowers, calls, letters, good wishes, prayers, and out pouring of friendship from those who remembered Steve on this special day.  Also to the friends who organized and worked to make the reception such a joyous occasion.  That's exactly the way Steve would have wanted it.

Steve's Obituary

Steve Allen loved to run around Lake Miramar.  This is where his spirit starts another venture as it passes from this world.  But his spirit will live on in the memories of fellow Old Pros and friends and family that knew and loved him.

Old Pros and family. Note that a few years are blank and especially those prior to 1996 are non-existent.  If you have any pictures of Steve you'd like to share please email them to Don Blankenship at webmaster@srop.org and include a narrative description for a photo caption.
